Our Story — Past & Present
University of Massachusetts Global (UMass Global) is a private, nonprofit institution dedicated to serving the needs of adult learners through flexible, high-quality education. With roots dating back to 1958, the university began as a Chapman College program offering on-base classes to military personnel at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in California. It evolved into Chapman University College in 2001 and was renamed Brandman University in 2009, expanding its reach and focus on working adults. In 2021, Brandman became University of Massachusetts Global, a nonprofit affiliate of the University of Massachusetts system. Today, UMass Global serves students internationally and in 49 states.
Regionally accredited by the WSCUC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), UMass Global continues to be recognized as a leader in online education, earning a spot on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Online Programs for 13 consecutive years (2013–2025).
