Our Story — Past & Present

University of Massachusetts Global (UMass Global) is a private, nonprofit institution dedicated to serving the needs of adult learners through flexible, high-quality education. With roots dating back to 1958, the university began as a Chapman College program offering on-base classes to military personnel at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in California. It evolved into Chapman University College in 2001 and was renamed Brandman University in 2009, expanding its reach and focus on working adults. In 2021, Brandman became University of Massachusetts Global, a nonprofit affiliate of the University of Massachusetts system. Today, UMass Global serves students internationally and in 49 states.

Regionally accredited by the WSCUC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), UMass Global continues to be recognized as a leader in online education, earning a spot on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Online Programs for 13 consecutive years (2013–2025).

We offer over 55 online programs tailored for workplace relevance — associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, along with teaching credentials, stackable certificates, and authorizations. All UMass Global coursework is 100 percent online, which meshes with the busy lives of our non-traditional students. We are known for attentive student support, accommodating transfer policies, high graduation rates, alumni satisfaction, and low student debt loan default rates.

At UMass Global, two classes per eight-week session is a full-time schedule, with one being part-time for term-based programs. Self-paced degrees are also available for those who want to take as many credits as they want within a six month billing period. Your advisor can help determine a workload that fits your life.
